Music at Holy Trinity

Music is important to our life and mission in weekly services, special services, and occasional public performances. Members of our congregation, choir, and visitors worship, learn, and serve through their involvement in a variety of musical styles. Music connects us to God, enhances the written word, unites people, empowers action, and brings joy. We celebrate God’s gift of music through:

  • Choral and congregational singing that is supported by both organ and piano

  • Performances of solo organ repertoire including prelude, postlude, offertory music

  • Performances of vocal and instrumental soloists in collaboration with organ and piano

  • Occasional university and community musical performances in our facility

Holy Trinity has a long history of excellent music.  The current music program enjoys the leadership of our new conductor Rex Man and our organist Phillip Roberts.  The location of Holy Trinity in Oxford, the home of Miami University, gives it access to many professional instrumentalists and vocal performers.

Phillip Roberts, Director of Music and Organist, as well as a talented composer, has recently graduated from the College Conservatory of Music (University of Cincinnati) with a Doctor of Musical Arts degree. In addition to his duties at Holy Trinity he is an Visiting Assistant Professor of Music Theory and Composition at Miami University. In the summer, he also teaches at the Interlochen Arts Camp in Michigan. A native of Virginia, he brings an air of Americana to many of his musical compositions while his residency in Cincinnati, the birthplace of funk, contributes to his use of soulful harmonies and rhythms.

The Stanley P. Ferch Organ

The Stanley P. Ferch Organ provides music for services at Holy Trinity. This is a free-standing tracker organ with three manuals, a mechanical key action, 33 ranks, 30 stops, and1,718 pipes.  It was built as Opus 27 by John F. Nordlie of Sioux Falls, SD in 1995 for Faith Lutheran Church in Prairie Village, KS.  In 2017 Holy Trinity purchased this organ to replace our former Wicks organ.  The Nordlie was moved to Holy Trinity in mid-September after changes to accommodate it were completed in our sanctuary.  For a detailed description of the organ, click here.

The Steinway Grand Piano

The Chancel also contains an excellent 7-foot Steinway grand piano, used for accompaniment and recital purposes.  The acoustical setting of the church is bright and resonant, amplifying the sound of voices and instruments appropriately.
